Titus Brein - Biography photography / mixed media

Titus Brein has been a professional photographer for two decades, starting with fine portraits of the people around him when he was fifteen. Then just black and white, and a darkroom, he took all his analogue experiences to the modern times, and works now also in high quality digital images. Titus works in several fields of interest, ranging from documentaries (mostly based upon travel experiences) to fashion/catwalk and more corporate-identity styled photography. His free work includes models in subtle interior/studio work and more abstract images. Enjoying the experiment, new mixed media work is developing combining photography/prints and other materials into fine art images.

Among his clientele are multinationals, media companies, magazines, fashion designers, interior designers and private collectors.

In his mixed media work, as well as his photography, Titus characterizes himself by emphasizing authenticity, the emotional moment, the light and the simple, though subtle scenery. Not manipulating sceneries too much in documentary, in the ambiance of a studio gives him another freedom of view and skills. Even when the subject of his works requires an amount of styling and producing, real life will be the emphasis.  In both arts Titus tends to function as if he were a lens, through which the viewer is given an insight in his views of irony and pureness. The versatile use of natural and artificial light reminds of the work of painters like Caravaggio.

Titus was raised in an artistic family, an enriching influence on his development as an artist, as well as on the broadening of his view on art in general. Consequently, his art-focused upbringing led him to be skilful in the crafts of art at a very young age, which gave him opportunity to create an own identity in his work from early on. In his adolescence The Academy of Fine Arts provided enough tools to develop his photographic process.

Seizing of the moment, which hypnotized Titus from childhood on – still portraits of his surroundings, the spherical investigations of what life might bring – seems to develop more and more towards a stylistically research of the meaning of pure image. It was only after ten years of working in several types of photography, that Titus started using his talents for more commercial purposes. Not because he had learned to do so at the Academy of Arts, but for the reason he realized that his passion, his work would forever remain in fine arts. Singular as he is, he chooses the image, the moment without too much interference from the exterior, just because of the exterior. In that sense, the photographer is to be seen as a translator. Photography helps him to express his urge for freedom. An outsider aware of his surroundings alike, he pictures the world around him in his view. Through ongoing intense investigations and technical processes he is capable of developing strong images. Since 2006 Titus started experimenting with photographic installations, in which an image seems to stand out of he context of a plane surface, and were light, glass and space define the representation. The multiple layering merge to symbiosis, al be it with a different technique, but bearing the same message.

He has been working in most parts of Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas. His base is his studio in the centre of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
